EuroCC 2

National Competence Centers in the Framework of EuroHPC

Supported by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, EuroCC 2 manages a European network of National Competence Centers (NCC) for high-performance computing and related technologies, promoting a common level of expertise across the participating countries.

EuroCC was launched in September 2020 with the aim of establishing a network of National Competence Centers (NCCs) for HPC technologies and services. Its focus includes not just traditional high-performance computing but also related technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance data analytics (HPDA). The project and its associated Coordination and Support Action CASTIEL concluded their first phase in December 2022.

Now in its second phase, EuroCC 2 oversees the continuing development of NCCs in 33 nations. This includes 32 NCCs established during the first project phase and one new center. Each NCC not only coordinates a national network for providing services to HPC users from industry, academia, and public administration but is also helping to establish a strong foundation for a European layer of HPC competence. EuroCC 2 monitors progress in the NCCs’ development, and supports the expansion (for the existing NCCs) or creation (for the new NCCs) of their individual operational frameworks.

HPC competences are an important pillar for a successful implementation of the European HPC (EuroHPC) strategy. Because different EuroHPC member states have pursued different strategies, competence levels have naturally grown at different speeds and with different focuses. To effectively implement a European HPC strategy that promotes the broader uptake of HPC technologies and services across all member states, it is critical that each participating country have similar capabilities, including expertise in service delivery and support.

To achieve this goal, EuroCC 2 works closely with CASTIEL 2, which collects resources, organizes meetings and events, and facilitates collaborations among the NCCs to promote the sharing of the enormous HPC expertise that is available across the EuroCC 2 network.
