"Die Bewegung in die Ironie hinein ist eine Empörung. Mit dieser Bewegung steigt der Mensch aus seiner Bedingung empor. Die Bewegung aus der Ironie heraus ist ein Engagement. Mit dieser Bewegung kehrt der Mensch in seine Bedingung zurück, um sie zu ändern. Die beiden Bewegungen heißen Freiheit."

"... there could hardly be a more unbearable - and more irrational - world than one in which the most eminent specialists in each field are allowed to proceed unchecked with the realization of their ideals",
F. A. Hayek, The Road to Serfdom, The University of Chicago Press, Fiftieth Anniversary Edition, p 62, 1994
The understanding and usage of high performance computers is my key research interest. Operating a supercomputer at HLRS allows to access one of the fastest systems world wide and develop methods for its usage and programming
As digital methods mature their combination starts to increase the potential of digitalization to change the way we live, work and spend our leasure time. These combinations of technologies can help to solve industrial and societal challenges for whcih supercomputing was only part of the solution.
The scientific foundation of simulation requires an understanding of the foundations of information science. In an ongoing dialogue with philosophers like A. Kaminski, P. Gehring, and C. Hubig as well as sociologists like O. Renn, N. Saam and C. Kropp I am working on understanding and exposing the background understanding of simulation in our society and our philosophical concepts of epistemology
Making supercomputers available to users is one key aspect of the work at HLRS. The concept of the Grid which was extended to the concept of a Cloud provides a framework within which my team and I work on developing methods for better usage of supercomputers in a seamless way.
Scalable systems will require scalable programming models to make the power of supercomputer available to scientific and industrial users alike. In our research we focus on all kinds of programming models evaluating them for the purpose of scalable as well as developing new approaches to use highly scalable systems
Having started to work on blood flow simulation we still keep investigating how simulation on supercomputers can help to understand blood flow phenomena. We have extended our reach into the simulation of bones and have started to work with medical doctors to make best use of supercomputers also in a clinical situation.
Science and humanities as well as art share a common purpose and goal when it comes to explaining and expressing the world. My work is based on discussions and collaborations with artists as well as researchers in science and the humanities.
Only major projects are covered here. Overall I have particpated in about 20 DFG projects, about 30 projects funded by the German federal government, about 30 projects funded by the state government of the state of Baden-Württemberg, about 80 European projects, and about 20 industrial projects

Education is a process involving two sets of participants who supposedly play different roles: teachers who impart knowledge to students, and students who absorb knowledge from teachers. In fact, as every open-minded teacher discovers, education is also about students imparting knowledge to their teachers, by challenging the teacher's assumptions and by asking questions that the teachers hadn't previously thought of.
