Hackathon by HiDALGO2, CIRCE and SEAVEA projects

HiDALGO2 project together with CIRCE and SEAVEA projects organise a joint hackathon that focuses on enabling Verification, Validation, and Uncertainty Quantification (VVUQ) for global challenge applications (e.g., those used in HiDALGO2 and CIRCE) using the SEAVEA toolkit (SEAVEAtk).

Any High-Performance Computer application researcher is invited to join, irrespective of their source domain. During the event, participants will learn about the SEAVEA toolkit and engage in hands-on learning by interacting with the SEAVEAtk experts, who will help them apply their choice of SEAVEAtk tools to their codes and applications. Participants will be given access to the Eagle supercomputer during the hackathon (before a sign-up is required).

Specifically for this Hackathon, the Multipurpose Uncertainty Quantification and Sensitivity Analysis (mUQSA) web-based Graphical User Interface will be introduced, which supports application developers and users lacking in-depth knowledge of the subject, and integrates with SEAVEAtk. mUQSA automates and streamlines the efficient execution of UQ computations on large-scale High-Performance Computing systems.

During the Hackathon, participants will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning by interacting with the SEAVEAtk experts, who will help in applying their choice of SEAVEAtk tools to their own codes and applications. Existing SEAVEAtk users are also welcome, as the team will offer support to add more rigorous VVUQ to their applications.

This course is a joint training event of EuroCC@GCS, the German National Competence Centres for High-Performance Computing, and HiDALGO2 project. It is organized by the HLRS in cooperation with the SEAVEA and CIRCE.

Prerequisites and content levels

Prerequisites
  • Basic Knowledge of High-Performance Computing (HPC): Participants should have a foundational understanding of HPC concepts, architectures, and programming.

  • Experience with Scientific Computing Applications: Familiarity with scientific computing or computational modeling in any domain is required. This includes experience with simulations, data analysis, or other computational research tasks.

  • Programming Skills: Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in HPC, such as C, C++, Fortran, or Python. Knowledge of parallel programming paradigms (e.g., MPI, OpenMP) is beneficial.

  • Familiarity with Verification, Validation, and Uncertainty Quantification (VVUQ): Understanding the basic principles of VVUQ in computational models and simulations. Prior exposure to these concepts in research or practical applications is advantageous.

  • Basic Linux/Unix Skills: Ability to navigate, use command-line tools, and perform basic operations in a Linux/Unix environment, as the Eagle supercomputer runs on such an operating system.

Agenda

All times are local times in the Central European Summer Time zone (Berlin).

  • Introduction to SEAVEA Toolkit (SEAVEAtk)
  • Access to Eagle Supercomputer
  • Create VVUQ procedures (EasyVVUQ)
  • Facilitate the creation of surrogate models for multiscale simulations (EasySurrogate)
  • Automate the complex workflows emerging from these procedures using HPC resources (FabSim3)
  • Enable the efficient execution of large numbers of jobs on computational resources (QCG Pilot Job Manager and RADICAL Cybertools)
  • Make creating coupled multiscale simulations easy, and then enable efficient Uncertainty Quantification of such models using advanced semi-intrusive algorithms (MUSCLE3)
  • Perform surrogate modelling using Gaussian Processes (MOGP)
  • Hands-On SEAVEAtk Training
  • Collaborative Project Development
